How do stocks get published so quickly and how is it so incorruptible?

Question by Pajama Wars: How do stocks get published so quickly and how is it so incorruptible?
When I am reading my tv screen and I see that a particular company has “gone up” or “down”, where did that tv station or newspaper get the information so quickly to publish? Actually more specifically, how does all this information about pricing of stocks in general get reviewed and published so instantly? How does this happen and what system enables it to happen? How is it so incorruptible?

Best answer:

Answer by Ken C
The prices quoted on TV are just the last trade on that particular stock on the exchange (NYSE, AMEX ect.) or NASDAQ they trade on. The last trade is reported via computer from the exchange. When you see it on TV the quotes (Prices Reported) may have up to a 15 minute delay.
So they are not pricing it themselves, they are just reporting what the last trade reported was.
Did that help???

Which out of currency or stock options is safer, and has a higher win ratio of you winning and making a profit?

Question by William M: Which out of currency or stock options is safer, and has a higher win ratio of you winning and making a profit?
I am 18 years old and I am looking to trade either stock or currency options. I know the basics of how stock options work, but I’m not sure of currency options. Which is better to trade out of currency options or stock options that is safer to trade? Also, which type of options out of currency options or stock options has the most likely chance and higher probability of you winning the trade and making a profit out of the two of them?

The volume on currency options is too small for me. I prefer the FX for currencies. Many individual stocks have the same problem. For such stocks again I prefer the stock itself or hedged strategies. For naked positions I keep to high volume index options. Less slippage, and a lot easier to get out, over ride any greater gain on other options. In short I’ll take the stock options over currency options all the time.

What kinds of stocks change price all hours of the day, and what kinds of stocks usually remain the same price

Question by Wizard: What kinds of stocks change price all hours of the day, and what kinds of stocks usually remain the same price
for years or months ?

Do cyclical stocks show more of a fluctuation in stock than other kinds of stocks?

Best answer:

Answer by Boris
Stocks that trade actively (bigger companies) have their stock change hands all the time and prices move.

Stocks of companies that arent listed on exchanges, (OTC stocks) often small illiquid companies most likely nonexistant in terms of businesses. They can stay at the same price forever as no one wants them, or until someone engineers a boiler room scam to swindle people.

I suggest you start with some free educational material on the web. I recommend the CBOE Learning Center at

http://www.cboe.com/LearnCenter/default.aspx

and the OIC education site at

http://www.optionseducation.org/

Both sites present a lot of free, quality information with no spam.

I then recommend you read at least one goob book about options.
Determine which book is best depends upon you to some degree. I recommend you scan multiple books at a large library, a large bookstore, or at Amazon.com to pick one that you like.

My two favorite books on the subject are “Options as a Strategic Investment” by Lawrence McMillan and “Option Volatility & Pricing” by Sheldon Natenberg.

I will mention one other book that I have not read. “The Rookie’s Guide to Options” by Mark Wolfinger has one advantage you may not find elsewhere. The author participates in the message board at

http://messages.yahoo.com/Business_%26_Finance/Investments/forumview?bn=4686677

posting under the name “dagnyt”.

You can ask him questions directly if you are unclear about anything in the book.

N.B. That message board has several “imposters” so be very careful to double check the name of the person making a post.

Q&A: How do I track down stocks that I once bought through a now-defunct online brokerage site?

Question by yemghost2001: How do I track down stocks that I once bought through a now-defunct online brokerage site?
About 10-12 years ago I bought some stock in a few companies (AT&T and Sears being two of them) through an online site that no longer exists (Quick and Reilly). My email and snail-mail address has changed multiple times since then and I have no idea where these stocks have gone. Is there an easy way to track them down so I can sell them / assume control of them again? Thanks!

Check with the stock exchange in yr country they must have someone in an Admin. role that can point you in the right direction? Your name will be listed with the individual companies you bought shares in again they must have someone that can fill you in on how to rightfully re-claim them (at the companies themselves). BTW – unless they are really strong companies & have not been affected by the GFC I wouldn’t be selling shares ATM, unless of course you need the cash. If these companies have been paying their investors franked or unfranked dividends, where have yours gone to? Good luck.
